Enlightenment Window Manager (E17) is Ready After 12 Years

Published in: Linux

After going through (not so) intense development for 12 long years Enlightenment 0.17 is finally here. There was a time (I still remember it fondly) when most Linux users show Enlightenment as an example of good looking and unique desktop environment for Linux systems. While the world moved on E17 finally decided to join us. Enlightenment is a lightweight desktop environment, its a small download and easy to install on Ubuntu.

Right now the best way to install Enlightenment on Ubuntu is through SVN:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:hannes-janetzek/enlightenment-svn
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install e17

e17-

e17-2

E17 crashed on me a couple of times with 5 minutes of installing it, so I wouldn’t yet recommend it as your default Windows Environment. You could try it out, to me it doesn’t offer anything compelling enough to make a switch. Hopefully (soon) it will stable enough for daily use.
